Knit-A-Square
Launched in 2008, Knit-A-Square is dedicated to making children and orphans living with AIDS in Africa warm. Many of these children are orphaned or have been abandoned. Many live in great poverty in shack settlements. Some head up families of their siblings together with other children and some live alone, without shelter, in hills and dumps around the cities. While other children's charities work hard to provide food and shelter, they are on a mission to provide warmth.
8"/20 cm squares that are knit and crochet are joined to form blankets then distributed throughout South Africa. They also accept donated knit and crocheted garments. Their overall goal for 2010 is to collect more than 105,000 squares.
Square Dimensions: 8"/20cm by 8"/20cm cardboard template, then use the template as a guide. See their patterns below for details.

Warm Up America!
Warm Up America! has warmed peoples' lives since 1991. It started in a small Wisconsin town with neighbors knitting and crocheting afghans for neighbors in need. Thanks to the creativity of founder Evie Rosen who came up with the idea of having volunteers knit or crochet small sections and then others join them together, the idea quickly caught on. Today Warm Up America distributes warm afghans, caps and other items to tens of thousands of people, thanks to the generosity of knitters and crocheters around the country.
Square Dimensions: To crochet or knit "perfect" Warm Up America! sections, cut a 7" by 9" cardboard template. Use the template as a guide; it's easier to handle than a measuring tape and great for kids. See their patterns below for details.
